Rooster or Guard Dog?

When I was young, we had two collies – Mac and Tammy.  They were definitely pets and not much use for anything else.  They certainly were no protection again unwelcome visitors.

But that didn’t matter because we had a rooster who believed it was his job to protect hearth and home.  He took this job very seriously.  The problem was, because he was a mere rooster, he didn’t know the difference between friend or foe.  He didn’t even know the difference between homeowner and guest.

Rooster - Red 1980?

In solitary confinement – for everyone’s protection!

This rooster literally made us prisoners in our own home.  Our usual exit from the house was the back porch.  We had to keep a broom on the porch to ward off the rooster (I confess, I don’t remember his name – I think I’ve blocked it out.).  Any time one of us dared to venture out of the house, we’d grab the broom and sweep it back and forth – just enough to scare him, not hurt him.

Heaven forbid if a neighbor wanted to visit, especially a child.  They had to arrange for this in advance so we could go out and corner the rooster until the innocent visitor made it safely inside.

One time I wasn’t fast enough and he flew at me, chicken feet first.  I still have a scar on my knee as a memento of that particular encounter.

I’m sure you’re thinking, “why on earth did you let the rooster have free reign in the yard?”  We certainly didn’t want to, but he managed to escape any cage we constructed.
Finally, we realized that this was an unacceptable situation.  We called a chicken farmer who agreed to take him.  He assured us that he could safely contain him and that he would most likely be knocked down a peg or two by other roosters.
I’m not sure what ultimately became of our Guard Rooster but, looking back, maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea after all.  I admit that even though I was afraid of him, I’d never felt safer from any other potential threat!
